Approaching Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is now regarded as a key underlying aspect of performing well. Studies show that those who possess high emotional intelligence have the capacity to outperform those with high IQs, all-round thriving holistically. In today’s PSE lesson, we were referred to an article that spoke of emotional intelligence and the 18 behaviours that are associated with those of high EQ. We reflected on the behaviours we commonly practice and those that we should strive to work on. I need to focus on improving the following:

  • Stopping negative self-talk in its’ tracks
  • Not seeking perfection
  • Not letting anyone limit the joy in your life

With that in mind comes the next question – what are the practical ways of implementing lifestyle changes catered to working towards these focal points?

  • Do something about the negative self-talk – Write it out. Uncover the of the insecurity and write out your thoughts on the matter. Jotting down your thinking may not only help in introspection, but also provide a space where you can process your thoughts whilst expressing it through a non-vocal medium.
  • Seek perfection in moderation – Seeking perfection is not always a bad thing, sometimes it can be seen as a strength. Nevertheless, have the self-awareness to do such in moderation so as to prevent from spreading yourself too thin.
  • Be your own person, be happy when you’re happy – Avoid from relying on others as your source of happiness. Give yourself the time and space to focus on yourself which includes your wellbeing and overall happiness.
