August Reflection

During this month, our teacher has been able to expose us to a lot of new vocabulary and sentence structures that we did not know about. We are also set out to constantly take part in the class discussions (in Spanish). I have taken advantage of this, constantly asking questions in Spanish and trying to point out any new words that my teacher uses when talking to us. This, I find, is the most efficient way for me to learn, as I consistently challenge myself and develop from any mistakes I make. I realize that although I do constantly go outside of my comfort zone, this has yielded valuable results that I gain a lot from. Due to this, I have set myself a few goals to keep improving my Spanish skills in the rate I am currently doing. Firstly, I want to expose myself to the four components that determine your fluency in a language: reading, writing, listening and speaking. I have set the challenge to myself to start speaking Spanish to the teacher instead of English, as vocal learning is a proven efficient method of attaining information. I have also set out to watch more Spanish TV shows and read Spanish news to expose myself in my everyday life to the language. This is a good way of practising my reading skills and most importantly, my listening skills which is the main component I want to improve on. Due to the fast pace of Spanish speakers, listening more to them speak will allow me to slowly but progressively be able to extract individual words and get a better understanding of what they are saying. My writing capabilities are the strongest in my opinion, and following through class and continuing to use new writing techniques and words will allow me to improve my ability here. In the next month, I will try to start working through these goals will reflect on my progress by the end of September.
