Activity: Karate 2

This year in karate I have been developing my leadership skills. As previously mentioned, I am responsible for leading the class through warmup/drill activities and for helping to dismiss the class at the end of the session. Throughout season 2 I have found that there is a carrot/stick dynamic during the class, and I am more adept at enforcing order through careful instruction and offering rewards. In this way, I think I have been able to develop better relationships with some of the younger members of the class who are just starting their karate journey as well as the older ones who are increasingly anxious about attaining their black belts. I believe that I have improved from the beginning of the year in that I’ve gradually become more confident in leading the class and more assertive when giving commands during exercises.

Moving into the second half of the year I think it would be interesting to play more of a “bad cop” role (in a controlled manner). In the new season a lot of younger children signed up and are not yet familiar with the behaviour expected during class. As such the more gentle approach that I’m comfortable employing with kids is not very effective. I think that a major goal for me is developing even more confidence so that I can bring and restore order in the dojo more efficiently by asserting my presence more!

Activity and Creativity: Culturama China 2017 1

As I have mentioned before, I was both extremely nervous and excited to take part in this year’s Culturama as it was my first time participating in the show. I think that I definitely challenged myself (LO2) when I signed up to audition as I did not have much confidence in my ability to dance. While I now realise that I am not as much of a disaster as I thought I was, I still have a lot of room to improve in terms of making my movements more fluid and in developing more confidence. An example of issues in confidence was our recent space rehearsal: while I had no issues while practicing in the dance rooms, standing on stage in the auditorium caused a lot of nerves and I forgot parts of the dance. I hope that I can improve on this issue before the performance as I think my enjoyment of the show will be greatly reduced otherwise.

Due to my lack of experience with dance, I have made additional efforts to stay committed (LO4) to Culturama by attending all compulsory rehearsals, as well as going to optional rehearsals and practicing in free dance studios during my free blocks. When planning my CAS experiences, I didn’t anticipate to spend this much time towards practicing for Culturama, but I found that I have been extra motivated by seeing how well others are doing – seeing other people in the group or members of other dances has inspired me to push myself more so that I can do just as well. Something that has stopped me from attending all optional rehearsals is my other commitments and I am not sure how this will affect my participation when Culturama rehearsals become more frequent and intense, but I am sure I will be able to overcome this challenge when it arises.

Below is a video of our dance recorded during our first light plot.
