The Island Foundation: Bintan

The Service Trip

What are the most significant challenges facing the Orang Suku Laut?

There are a few big challenges faced by the people of Orang Suku Laut, but in my opinion, the main problem here is the health and nutrition. There are other problems such as Hygiene and cleanliness which worsen the issue. I know the importance of health and nutrition in everyone’s personal life. The diet is a huge problem as it causes diabetes, which I find to be the root problem in this situation.

How are The Island Foundation programmes addressing these challenges?

I find it really interesting and hopeful as to how football is used to improve the health of the people of Orang Suku Laut. Football is an extremely intense sport which comes with its big advantages. It improves the overall body strength and also is a fun and efficient way to become fit. Furthermore, I feel it is crucial to change the diet of the locals as it will significantly increase the quality of living and will also significantly decrease the chance of diabetes. I know this will be hard to go through but only time will tell if these steps will help the locals.

Which programme interests you most and why?

I am most interested in the Football Academy Bintan (FAB). I love football and have been playing for the majority of my life. During this time period, I have learnt to love and admire the sport. I want to share my love for the sport to the young locals and help them become fit and healthy youngsters.
