What makes it evocative? effective? (Rosa Parks)

Airline Terminal, Atlanta, Georgia, 1956

The image is striking as it shows a stone-faced American (White) woman next to the black ‘help’ cradling a white baby. The posture is this photo particulary highlights the lack of interest the white woman is showing to her baby. Furthermore, the small detail of leaving a seat between the two incorporates racial segregation and highlights the distinctive difference between the two types of people in a consisting social class.

This photo shows the continuous hours of servitude that the ‘help’ put into their employers, said to be taken at 2.00 am in the morning (at an airport) this allows us to see their daily life and the high demand of work from the whites.

  • Looks as if there is a filter put on this photo, shows a gloomy effect and almost casts a shadow on the reality of working for the higher class (the whites)
  • No expression is shown, meaning there is no element of connection shown between the existing 3 people in the photo
