Critique: Too vague

Question 4: I would require a character that is unlike the mundane environment and portrays unique characteristics, they would have conflicting views to the majority and would essentially have a conflict between them and an alternative character. The character would typically commit a crime as a  result of the want/crave to be rebellious. This conflict creates a challenge for soap operas.

Large overview question:  (Combined ideas for question 1 and 2)

What DOES this book seem to say about life and imagination and art and reality? OR if that’s too hard, ask yourself: if Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter represent Mario’s two loves (romantic love, literature), then what does the book seem to say is more important to happiness?

Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter addresses the idea of happiness and meaning in a young boy’s life. However, his happiness seems to be an illusion at times through his false idea of what ‘true love is’ and who his role models are. Pedro Camacho is seen as an inspirational figure in Marito’s life, yet he seems to have a vague and formal relationship with him at work, ultimately lacking the comfort and encouragement that Marito craves in the writing industry. Mario’s imagination tends to dictate his idea of happiness in reality and enhance his expectations of contentedness, this is explicitly seen through the figure of Aunt Julia in Marito’s life. The initial stages of attraction between the two characters are heavily based on lust and the feeling of being rebellious, as the book develops Marito’s image of their love being eternal becomes more of an illusion and hopeful dream of theirs.

The art of Pedro Camacho’s serials is utilized as a platform to enhance the idea of imagination and the crazy hectic lives that can form. The serials are initially seen as abstract, however as Marito’s life getts seemingly similar to the serials it can be seen that imagination becomes reality. To an extent art and imagination are based on each other, however, the influence of reality can play a heavy role in dictating what is considered banal and mundane in an individuals eyes.
