Tarantella

One interesting way in which Ibsen uses the tarantella dance as a motif is to fill Nora’s role as a submissive wife. Before this we have learned that Nora is capable of being independent by taking out loans herself and forging and signature. Ibsen uses the tarantella dance as a way to enforce Nora’s original subservient role further enhanced by Torvald’s commands(dialogue); “Slower, slower!”, “Not so violently, Nora!” and “that is not a bit right”. Nora’s struggle between the want to stay independence and the unfavoring Krogstad circumstances is symbolised by the frenzied tarantella dance.
