Global Politics EA: 1st reflection

When choosing a political issue to investigate for my Engagement Activity, I made an effort to choose something which was of personal importance to me, and which I could learn from. I originally wanted to focus on LGBTQ+ rights in Australia, as this issue had been on my mind a lot due to the recent plebiscite on Same-Sex marriage. The public debate that this plebiscite caused, lead me to think in more depth about LGBTQ+ rights, particularly how they intersect with religious freedom laws. While I have a personal stance on this issue that is informed by my close friendships with many LGBTQ+ people, I also know many people, including family members, who have differing views on this topic. By investigating different perspectives on this issue, I hope that my EA will allow me to develop a deeper understanding of other points of view, and to enrich my own point of view.

EE Initial Reflection

My experience with the extended essay so far has been a bit daunting but enjoyable. My initial proposal was accepted, and while I was happy about that, as I am very passionate about my topic, I was also unsure of how it would become an essay. My original idea was just to write about fanfiction, however I knew after my first meeting with my supervisor, that this was far too broad. I also struggled with focusing it around the Language and Literature subject, as fanfiction is a topic that extends outside of this subject. After deciding to focus my essay on queer representation and queer theory in fanfiction, I began my research. This was another area where I struggled at first, as there is not a wide range of academic writing on fanfiction on sites like JSTOR. However I overcame this hurdle when I discovered the Transformative Works and Cultures journal, which has many academic articles about my topic.
