Deborah – Writer’s Fortnight

Deborah was a really inspirational and interesting person to listen to. Her poems were especially moving because you could hear the passion in her voice.

I thought that some aspects of her talk were really inspirational. When she talked about some of her challenges while growing up I was inspired as she showed us that no matter what happens in life, we have to keep going. One thing she said that really stuck with me was when she talked about questioning the meaning of relationships. It made me think about how important the people around me really are and if any of it really matters.

I felt like I could relate to her in some aspects. One aspect being identity. Deborah has a mix of many cultures in her DNA and for that reason, she never identified with one particular culture. She said that she felt disconnected with her roots. I think that many of us could relate to this due to the fact that we are all third culture kids. It was interesting to hear the story of someone who felt the same way. I realized that identity is something that is extremely important to many people. Although we often say that labels are unnecessary, we find it assuring to belong somewhere.
