TWC2 – Writer’s Fortnight

This was a highly interesting session as it talked an issue that is close to our homes. Often times we perceive Singapore as a safe bubble in which nothing bad can happen. However, after this talk, I was proven wrong. I realized that foreign workers we see through Singapore are often sacrificing a lot of their lives in hopes of working, and cannot get even that. This really made me change the way I perceive the workers in Singapore.

One fact that I found really alerting that the system is very broken.  There is not much anyone can do to help out, other than changing the whole system itself. Employers may not have sufficient money to pay the workers however sometimes, there is nothing they can do about that. This creates a cycle in which the workers will never win unless everything goes perfectly.

In UWC we often talk about causes around the world, but forget the problems within our community. After this talk, I am going to make an active decision to help out this community in ways such as spreading awareness and hopefully, volunteering in the future.
