Muhammadiyah Welfare Home – Circus Skills (L02, L04)

A few weeks into this activity, I have learnt many new circus related skills but at the same time I have had lots of struggles, which required me to persevere and to keep trying.

The first stage of this service is to acquire and learn some circus skills, in order to be able to perform for others. I especially wanted to try unicycling because it seemed very interesting and fun. I knew it was going to be a tough challenge, but that was the point of the activity.

I am often afraid of failure and I know having to fail many times will make me doubt myself. Sometimes I felt like giving up and doing something else, rather than unicycling. But I kept telling myself that If I was committed to it, one day I will be able to do it. I just have to go by my own pace.So far, I’ve been able to manage a few seconds on the unicycle, juggle, and use the stilts. (as shown below) I kept trying and practicing these skills every week, and I can definitely see how much I have improved because I was resilient and with every mistake, I learn from it. We all have to start somewhere, after all.

The people around me help me stay committed and motivated to keep trying. Some of the students who were here last year came back to help this year, and seeing them do all the things I am trying to learn helped push me to keep trying. My friends and I also helped each other with the different activities, supporting each other. This helped me to stay committed, and I’m looking forward to when I will be able to unicycle and do other things.

(Will add more photos with unicycle)

Hey! This post really highlights your resilience and commitment – 2 important IFP peace building characteristics! Another highlight was your positive mindset and collaboration with your friends. This shows that you are really dedicated to this and passionate to learn more. These are really transferable skills! One question I had from reading this post is how did you chose this activity?
