Dear Mentor group…

Here’s what we should do next Tuesday:

We should read the “The work not yet done” by Godin together!

“Could be…

That you don’t know what needs to be done.

That you don’t know how to do what needs to be done.

That you’re afraid to do what needs to be done.

It’s frustrating. We want to move up, we want our project to make more of an impact, we want to ship–but the undone work hangs over us.

If you care enough, the path forward is clear, isn’t it?

You can model what needs to be done, basing your next steps on what others have done before you. You can ask your boss or your clients for an agenda. You can test and test again. You can leap.

You can learn how to do what you don’t know how to do. You can improve your skills, get better tools and do the hard work of actually getting better at the work.

But most of all, you can realize that the most urgent work is the work of dancing with our fear, because the fear is the real reason the work isn’t getting done.”

We can first question what is on the paper. “Are we afraid to do what needs to be done.” But why? Are we scared of ourselves and our own capabilities? Or are we afraid we can’t capable enough to do it. How do we overcome this fear then?

Some other questions to ask is how this can be applied to us as individuals? To our daily lives? To school work, to our daily interactions and even arguments?

Why it matters…

Reading these works of art helps us understand ourselves better, it enriches us with new and profound ways of thinking, and different ways of looking at something. We can look at an argument differently; rather than to figure out who is right or wrong, you can try to figure out why the stakeholders are trying to prove themselves right rather than trying to reach a peaceful settlement.

I think this adds valuable help and insight to our lives.

Your post reminded me that IFP can help students voice their questions they have about their work. Due to the fact that students are either scared to ask or are just not confident, they are unwilling to ask for help when they need it. One challenge that you should think about while discussing this is that some students may not even be willing to share their thoughts verbally. Maybe have an alternate way or communication for this.
