CAS: Planning for Interactive Storytelling and Movement with PCF 858

LO3 Planning and Initiating Activities

Last week, we had a whole session to plan out the story and activity we would tell them. First, my group and I decided on the book which we were going to read. We decided that we were going to read the book called ‘Something Else’ By Kathryn Cave. Their unit, which they are doing at school, is all about their identity, so we decided to choose a suitable book. The first step was to determine how we read the book. There are many different ways, such as acting or drawing it out. Because we only had one session to plan instead of two, we chose to read it. To help make it more engaging, we had each group member voice a different character.

We set up an activity to go along with the book. The book was about identity, so we decided to do some drawing about what makes up our personality. We created an example of a picture to show the children. In the illustration, we included our nationality, sports we like, family, the food we want, and pets. We had to keep it simple because young kids of the age 5-7 needed to do it. Then, we practised reading through the book so we could read it fluently and smoothly.

Today we had our sessions with the kids. It went smoothly; however, some parts of our plan had to change during the session. For example, when we asked them to get their pen and paper for our drawing activity, they had to go around the classroom to find the materials, which ate into our time. To overcome this challenge, we were talking a bit about our self and our identity. To improve this next time, I will set aside extra time, so these accidents don’t affect us too much.
