Representation

For representation, we looked at 2 different instances where representation was perhaps ‘incorrect’ or wrong. The first one was about the character ‘Apu’ in The Simpsons. Reading the two articles about the topic; one against Apu being in The Simpsons and the other for Apu, it somewhat solidified my opinion about the topic. Even before reading the articles, I already disagreed with the fact that Apu was misrepresented due to the circumstances of The Simpsons being a comedy show that essentially makes fun of everyone and every culture, so why should the Indian or South Asian people be represented everything. The argument that every single character in the show should be represented better would be more of an argument than the current one that the character of Apu is racist, in my opinion. The article that was for Apu was called ‘Don’t get rid of Apu, he’s a hero to many of us’ was an article that I could really agree with due to its many points being valid. On the other hand, the other article called ‘Love the Simpsons but hate Apu?’ was filled with invalid points that the writer desperately tried to nitpick, and the majority of the article’s points came from the documentary against Apu.

The other instance of possible misrepresentation was the Dolce & Gabbana. This advert was decently shocking and in my opinion, was blatantly racist due to the misrepresentation of the Chinese culture. The idea that there was a big difference between cultural appropriation and assimilation was brought up, and that held significance to me. I felt that the use of chopsticks to eat the western/Italian food was a very bad decision and misrepresented the Chinese/Asian culture poorly.
