Nature, Nurture and Gender

The Nature vs Nurture debate has been a very fascinating and intriguing dispute that has been going on for decades and even centuries. There has always been the question of what influences one’s identity more genetics or environment. Though the environment you are brought up in and raised in can have an influence on your identity and personality, I think genetics and Nature have a huge influence and make up most of your gender. I think in my opinion most of my gender or even all of it is shaped by the genetics and how I was born. However, some may say that in this case your environment and how you are nurtured matters a lot, I think the genetics that makes up your brain and your psychological processes will still make up most of your gender. For example in some countries in Europe, intersex children grow and discover who they are and what gender they believe they fall under and so when they are sure, after the age of 12-18 they can go under Sex reassignment surgery and get reassigned into the gender they believe they are. Though the influences of genetics are very high and influential, However, I think gender roles and how your gender changes or affects your behavior and personality is mostly shaped and created by your environment and how you are nurtured and brought up. For example, when I was young I would change my tastes in music to be more masculine and more stereotyped to my gender and so I felt that I gained a more sense of belonging and being accepted in society. I think my influence of the idea of gender and what I should do and how I should behave came from different medias not only tv shows and movies but also books and different images, However, I think as I’ve grown up, my idea of gender has broadened as I’ve become more open-minded and informed.
