Service- Local Service- Reflection #2

At this point in time, we are about to have the switchover from the g10’s in our service to g9’s. From our next session, we are going to start having the partners from Hougang Care centre come and visit us. Up until now, we have been recording fitness videos, led by the members of our service group, and sent them to the care centre. We had one special session where we were able to go and deliver some gifts we had collected from the giving tree donation, and we had a phone call for some feedback/meeting with Ms Nisha after we had sent them our first video.

LO3 is specifically about planning and initiating activities. As the chairs of the service, it was our responsibility to plan the sessions and make sure we have all of the materials that are necessary for any subsequent upcoming sessions. An example of this is what is going to be happening very soon, the first face to face interaction we are going to be having with the Hougang care centre.  We had to talk to the past year chair’s of the service to make sure we knew what sort of activities they enjoyed doing, and what we could do for the very first meeting. This has to be done a few weeks prior to the session as we had to be able to discuss with our group as well. It was important to make sure we knew exactly what we were doing in advance and everything that we needed.

LO6 was about engaging with issues of global importance. The Hougang Centre is a care centre with patients of varying mental illnesses, they mainly deal with the idea of the destigmatisation of mental illness. It is quite a prevalent problem especially in countries like Singapore, where there are lots of negative opinions towards mental illness. As a service at UWC, we aim to try and obviously raise awareness about this issue, but also want to try and create (+maintain) relationships with the members staying at Hougang. A lot of times, they are discriminated towards in society, because people do not know hoe to interact with them, therefore by raising awareness and building trust and relationships with them, we can try and learn as much as possible about this issue and what we can do to the best of our abilities.

It will definitely be very interesting to see how different it is when they come to school and we can interact with them face to face for the first time, and I will include everything in my next reflection.
