Wilde and Guirgis

BASIC THOUGHTS (rewrite later)

Jesus Hopped the A Train:

  • a comedic tragedy
  • characters are upfront – they say what they mean, vulgar, personal
  • immersion of audience: audience would understand more if they were experiencing the play rather than witnessing it
  • use of FOILS – each character exposes their foil to a deeper level; their character, underlying thoughts/ feelings, etc.

The Importance of Being EarnestL

  • a trivial comedy
  • each character says something different to what they actually mean: there’s a lot of play on language and representation
  • the play itself is quite static: the characters barely move, which means audiences need to be roped in
  • use of pairs – each character has a person they are ‘paired’ with: represents the stupidity of the marriage and the typical constructs of society.
