Challenges of being ‘Disabled’

We have now met up with the students from Lighthouse school about 4 times, and have engaged them in a variety of activities throughout. It has been extremely interesting because I have been able to develop a nice bond with several students over the weeks. I think that a big part about being able to develop this bond has been taking initiative. Some of the students are more closed off than others, and I wanted to ensure that everyone was comfortable at their time in our school; The only way to do that was to drive myself to initiate conversations, and engage them in interesting activities.

There is one boy who is a little older than me, and after several conversations with him I realised he really enjoyed it when I read books to him or asked him more about himself. I ensured that there were more interesting books from then on, and I even got to read Harry Potter to him once! I discovered he likes Harry Potter as well, and although we did not get to talk much about it, I hope to delve further into this connection during our next meetings.

Initially a problem that I faced with many of the students was that they weren’t that comfortable in engaging in conversations, and sometimes just liked to listen or do activities individually. Over the few weeks, this has changed and I hope that since they will see us more often this year we will be able to do more interesting activities that do develop their fine motor skills.
