4.1 Miles – Global Perspectives

This short documentary is about a coast guard who has the mission to save hundreds of refugees stranded in the greek sea. Their only choice to escape war from their country is by sea and during their journey they lose people in their life. It happens everyday, “every hour 10 of us are called to save refugees drowning in the greek sea,” a coast guard says.

The controversy of whether it is ethical it the fact that they are brining these refugees to a small greek island where it won’t be able to handle and take care of a growing population of refugees in the future. Locals talk about the lack of infrastructure on the island and that it might cause an even bigger problem for the refugees because they won’t be able to support them.  In my opinion, what the coast guards are doing is ethical because saving innocent people from a critical situation is a good deed, but the locals think otherwise because of the fact that it creates problems for their community.

The refugees kept praying, hoping for god to make things better which meant that they had faith that god could save them. Perhaps some of the refugees aren’t usually religious but in a time of crisis, they have enough faith in god to pray because they feel that it is the only option. When they see the boat and the coast guards, they also must have faith in them because they wouldn’t know whether to trust them or not, especially coming from a war situation.
