This year, I was finally able to participate in Culturama – in the mutually agreed upon best dance, USA!
Being a part of Culturama was a goal for me for all of High School, but I never began trying until this year. With the mindset of “it’s my last year, who cares?” I decided to audition for 3 of my favourite dances. USA had the hardest audition, and I was sure I wouldn’t get in – yet I did, and a few months later, we were on the stage performing for hundreds of people.
I’m not a particularly talented dancer, so in this dance full of actual dancers, I had to work harder to keep up. I spent hours using the dance recordings to practice at home, until I was confident I would get the moves right the next week. Through this process, I began to fully understand the value of collaboration – although dance seems like a fairly individual thing, it was important that I got feedback from someone else, who could watch me as the audience would and tell me how to improve. At times, I wanted to avoid our weekly practice, or I wouldn’t want to practice at home, but I knew it was something I had to do. In the end, it paid off – our dance was perfect, the entire Culturama cast and audience were impressed, and I had a great time performing!
