Kids These Day

1. Quotes from the episode that you found interesting.

1) It redefines a young person’s relationship to their tech, and because mobile tech is, well, mobile, it frees the user form parental supervision. Which means it’s not just the relationship between young people and the internet that’s changing, it’s also the relationship between those young people and their parents.

2) But if you know if you’re really serious about preparing your kids to live in a digital world, you need to offer them the tools to navigate that world, and if the only tool we have to equip our kids for the challenges of the internet is the off switch?

3) My whole tack, and it’s what I wrote a book about, was this idea of trying to not say, “Technology bad!” But explain, “Technology why?” How it’s been designed to get us to behave in certain ways?

4) My hope is that people can, instead of focusing on the negative, let’s look at the why’s and let’s look at the other stuff that’s good that’s going on, too.

5) According to this research, many more kids say they feel addicted to their phones than addicted to social media, so take that for what it is worth. About 47% of kids say they feel addicted to their actual devices versus 24% addicted to social media.

2. Explain how the episode used the conventions, and to what effect?

The Pre-Intro Bumper of this podcast is very attractive and creative, starting with many teenagers talking about how often they use their phones, which gives the audience a clear understanding about what will be discussed in the podcast. Then, leading by a light short intro-music, the narrator briefly introduces the topic, show and host, which doesn’t use lots of time since the audience would probably feel bored in that way. The most impressive thing for me is the outro music, because the rhythm is very easy to remember. This gives the audience a deep impression toward the podcast, and make them want to watch it again.

3. What about this episode helps you pick the challenge to try out?

This episode mainly discusses how we should manage our relationships with the devices, and suggests that we should treat technology as the tool it is meant to be, but not our “task masters”, which I think I should improve on. When I was doing homework, I would use my phone to look up a few definitions of the words, but sometimes, instead of translating, I opened my social media when I see a new notification comes in. This makes my work less efficient and taking up more time to be done. Therefore, I picks the challenge of “turning off all the notification” to help me focus on my work.

4. What new questions do you have as the result of thinking about this episode?

1) Why are more kids addicted to their actual devices instead of social media?

2) What can parents do to make their children more engaged in real world instead of the world online?

  1. I think the most important quote you highlighted was the tird one. I say this because there is more to technology than it just being bad it is the reasons for why it was designed like that.
The question that most interests me is What can parents do to make their children more engaged in real world instead of the world online? I say this because that is something that I am really interested in trying to get people outside more as well.

  2. I love the quotes you choose and the reasons given as well. Really good editing and writing structure. It’s quite clear and bulleted to understand.

  3. I thought the most important quote you highlighted was fourth one “My hope is that people can, instead of focusing on the negative, let’s look at the why’s and let’s look at the other stuff that’s good that’s going on, too.” because smart phone and technology is not always bad for people. If they utilise it well, their life will be much easier.
The question that most interests me is “What can parents do to make their children more engaged in real world instead of the world online? ” because most parents don’t know how to deal with their kids when they capture their kids playing on their phone instead of doing work or studying.

  4. I think the most important quote you highlighted was “My hope is that people can, instead of focusing on the negative, let’s look at the why’s and let’s look at the other stuff that’s good that’s going on, too.” I think so, people always focus on something bad happened to others, for example, an idol’s husband cheated on her…
Then the news will be spread widely, however, no one cares about whether the person wants others to know. The question that most interests me is “Why are more kids addicted to their actual devices instead of social media?” I say this because I want to know the answer as well. Good job!
