How do we plan for the WOL week?
Here’s a slideshow to help you organise your ideas and resources:
A brand new batch of FIB WOL students have received their briefing
Preparing for the World of Learning Week
Letter of Acceptance Clause
Dear FIB World of Learning parents,
The FIB World of Learning week is approaching and I would like to take this opportunity to update you on how plans and preparations are moving ahead.
I have spent time over the last few months working with the FIB students supporting them as they connect with employers, endeavouring to arrange their placements. We have seen some terrific initiative and many of the students have managed to organise their week entirely by themselves; an impressive achievement.
Some career areas have proved more difficult to connect with and in these cases we have worked with students and employers to help our students find a placement. We are now at the stage where most of the FIB students have a placement and so are in our final stages of planning.
All of the students have been given a World of Learning Agreement Form, which is to be signed by themselves, the employer and also by you as their parent or guardian.
The students know that they can not go out on their placement until this signed form is completed and handed in to me and so please can I ask you to encourage your son or daughter to finalise this aspect of the process this week.
Again, in preparation for the week, I would ask you to also re look at the UWCSEA Letter of Acceptance clauses that pertain to extra mural activities. If this leads to any questions, please let me know.
I would also like to let you know that in the week prior to their time out on their placements myself and Niki Dinsdale (University Counsellor) will be with the FIB students every day during their mentor time to ensure that they are well prepared for their time off campus and that any final queries are addressed, leaving our FIB students fully prepared and ready to make the most of their week in the workplace.
As our FIB students move towards their IB studies and their thoughts are undoubtedly turning to life beyond school we really hope that this is an opportunity that proves fruitful. It is a time to be motivated, engaged, curious and excited about the possibilities ahead and we very much hope the World of Learning programme has given them some time to think about the potential the future holds.
Many thanks,
Vanessa Wiseman
MORE World of Learning Application Success
What a brilliant group of G10 FIBs we have this year! Look at all these fantastic applications!
First, from Sean Toms, this excellent letter:
Hi Mr Teves,
My cross country coach, Ian Deeth, gave me your email address and suggested I contact you about the possibility of doing my week of work experience (10-14 June 2019) with the AIS Activities / PE departments. I am interested in a future career as an Activities/ PE/Outdoor education teacher and I think I would learn a lot from shadowing teachers for the week and helping the departments in whatever way I can.
This is not a summer job or an internship it is just one week to learn as much as I can about what it is like to be a PE/Activities teacher and to see if it is something I would be interested in for a future career.
I think that I could be of some benefit to AIS because I am very enthusiastic about all sports, as shown on my attached resume.
Thank you,
Sean
While I could not post the details of his resume, suffice it to say that it was well impressive and resulted in an instant and positive response of the Australian International School here in Singapore.
Meanwhile, Megna Shrinvasan had the right idea in incorporating her resume into her application letter:
Dear Terra Minds Team,
Hope you are all doing well! I am Megna Srinivasan, a Grade 10 student at United World College, Singapore. I am writing this email to you to enquire about a one-week internship opportunity with your organisation to gain experience in educational fields. This is a part of an in-school ‘World of Learning’ project where students are encouraged to gain work experience in the real world. I have always been passionate about Education and Science.
Over the years, I have acquired experience working with children by volunteering at the NGO ‘Building Blocks’ in India over my summer vacations and have assisted in teaching basic English, Science and Mathematics to Pre-School Children. This is an image from my time teaching there
Along with gaining an IGCSE-Level Understanding in Science, I have gained experience in science by:
Attending a Neuroscience summer course in The University of Berkeley, California
Interning at Sita Bhateja Hospital in Bangalore, India
Lab Work in studying Regenerative Medicine with iCrest, India
Registered First Aider (proof of certification link here)
Additionally, I am the Youth Ambassador of Plan B, an Environmental Awareness Group in Bangalore and am invested in environmental science.
If you would allow me I would love to have a one-week opportunity with your team gaining experience and learning as much as I can. If given this opportunity, I promise to be co-operative, punctual, flexible, hard-working and a motivated team player assisting you with any requirements and bringing some new ideas to the table.
If you have any further questions regarding the ‘World of Learning’ programme please contact the co-ordinator Ms.Wiseman at vwi@gapps.uwcsea.edu.sg
Looking forward to hear from you!
Kind Regards and Happy Holidays,
Megna Srinivasan (United World College East, Singapore)
Excellent work! Looking forward to more application acceptance emails in the coming weeks.
Happy 2019!
Congratulations Swasthi! World of Learning has begun in earnest!
So wonderful to complete the introduction to World of Learning with such keen and brilliant young men and women.
And when they deliver the results, they deliver in full.
Here was Swasthi’s application letter:
Dear Mr Namazie:
Good Morning.
My name is Swasthi R Shankar and I am a student from UWCSEA East in Singapore. I am writing to you to ask you about a one week internship during June 2019. My school has a World Of Learning project for us to be able to experience working in one of the occupations we are interested in.
I have always held a great interest in law and would like to complete the internship program at your law firm, Mallal & Namazie. Although the internship takes place only in June, it is required in my school to plan this earlier.

As I’ve mentioned to the group, this is a good time to apply because it is quiet in most offices and most employers will have the ability to process applications.
Meanwhile, check out this brilliant resume by Pranav!
I wish everyone the best of luck in their applications!
Dilucidar: A Case Study in Internship
Wonderful feedback from one of our partners. Will let you read her own words below. Well done, Urja and Praniti from our East Campus and to Elsa from Dover.
Dear all,
I just wanted to share with you the amazing product we have made with the help of the UWC interns. I just got back from Abu Dhabi where the Emirati Diplomatic Academy launched a regional SDG Center of excellence together with the Sustainable Development Solution Network.
We designed an amazing card set for them and the advance edition was shared at this high level event. The box was distributed to students of the Emirati Diplomatic Academy and the high-level guests they invited to the launch. I had the opportunity to personally give a set to Jeff Sachs and tell him all about it. It is a card set with several card games that are designed to educate people about world facts and the Sustainable Development Goals. It even has an augmented reality feature that makes it even more impressive.
Elsa, Praniti and Urja did an amazing job. The project of course has evolved since they worked on it last summer but their contribution is there. They were instrumental in shaping a project that was targetted at young audiences. I have included their names are in the credits and I am delighted that they can concretly show they have been part of such a extraordinary project.
Thank you Elsa, Praniti and Urja!
Best wishes.Carolina

Remember that you have the following timelines as guide:
June 10 – start of WOL internship
May 6 – finalise internship/sign contract

This spreadsheet should prove helpful in sharing your progress as well as helping each other brainstorm ideas for application. Speaking of applications, don’t forget to check in once in a while here for possible contacts in the field in which you are interested.
Here is the website to help you create your own polished and professional resume.
And here are some things to remember when writing your application/cover letter.
For your final reflection before the holidays, try to answer the following:
What are my personal goals for the World of Learning Week?
What am I hoping to learn in the process?
What might resources might I use to help me achieve these goals?
Who might I speak to to help me move forward?
Looking forward to hearing from you in our follow up session on the week of January 21.
Happy Holidays!
Welcome to Summer Internship and World of Learning!
We begin our internship journey by doing some planning and reflection using the slideshow below. Feel free to bookmark and follow this blog for more updates on Summer Internship.
Please look at Slide 7 and make sure that you add the link to your portfolio blogs or a GDoc where you will house all your reflection and/or evidence collection. Note that I have included the link to my blog and I intend to update this as we go along. We will meet again in August to reflect on our learning throughout the internship process.
Meanwhile, here are some successful planning and reflection conversations from this year’s FIB World of Learning interns. As you can see, they have learned from their week of internship and were able to collect evidence of work experience:
