The Odyssey – Graphic Novel version by Seymour Chwast

what are you thinking as you read? what are the scenes and details and images that stand out to you?

  • Despite the Odyssey having quite a serious and somber tone most of the time, the unconventional style Chwast uses makes the tone more lighthearted and playful.
  • The cartoon-approach as well as the very quick pace, makes the story seem less realistic. For instance, the facial expressions seem more cartoony and quite comical, especially in the last panel where we see Odysseus hurt and defeated.  In the Emily Wilson version, I felt bad and worried for him, but here I couldn’t help but smirk.
  • The Odyssey can be quite unbelievable at times, so I think Chwast here tried to highlight those crazy aspects with his style
  • Since the Odyssey is action-packed and this version resembles quite a  few aspects an action-packed graphic novel would, it weirdly works (e.g. close up to Athena’s face, last panel where his raft is destroyed, bold capital letters in the last panel)
  • I’m unsure if setting this story in space adds any more depth to the story but either way, Hermes looks cool with his jetpack.
