In the last two seasons of the service, we have covered a lot of bases. With a new group of grade 10’s we introduced to the service, we needed to effectively ensure they understood the processes that take place in the service. After the initial adjustment period, our service got into full swing. While the group was familiarising themselves with the process, we (the chairs) developed some effective systems to increase productivity.
1. We developed a weekly plan doc
This enabled us to stay organised in terms of what needs to be done in the future and what has been completed. This keeps us up to date on our tasks. It also enables the group members to stay updated with the progress of our service, as well as being productive at the start of each session, as they are ready to go to complete the tasks.
2. we developed an updated community notice board
This notice board is a google slideshow of the current stocks of plants we have in the rooftop garden. It enables the wider community around us to find out about which plants we have. This is for the community around us to be aware of the stocks and feel free to take any cutting or plant that we have grown. It is also an educational board, as we provide information about the growing conditions required to grow the plant or cuttings.
Some images of the progress during the 2 seasons
There are definitely areas of improvement and goals for our service now that the new grade 9’s are coming in!
With the current Covid situation, it is tougher to outreach to the community in order to have the younger community members in our school to interact and learn from the work in our service.
We would like to:
– Create an effective outreach program for middle and junior schoolers
– Effectively educate the school community about our service and what we provide
– Continue to maintain productivity levels during our service time
It has been a pleasant start to the service, and we are looking forward to continuing covering new frontiers!
