This Swot analysis was done with the 10th Grade Students in February, at the start of the school year. We also did some Goal setting and identified our goals as the follwing,
1) Work with students in infant school to provide small plants so that they can observe plant growth and ways to propagate
2) Once a month – lunchtime session – the group will go over to Infant School to teach students in the infant school about propagation.
3) Plan sessions in January with elementary students then with new students in February monthly sessions
4) Keep track of plant progress through a spreadsheet evaluating the growth of seeds and cuttings
5) Increase in planting to the herb garden
This Swot analysis was done with the 9th Grade students in May, nearing the end of the school year. This was to see how much we have improved from the start of the year and what areas of improvement are still left. As a group, we felt that we have achieved all of our goals we initially set for ourselves. Here is a list of things we want to partake in next year:-
1) When working with the K1 groups begin our sessions with introductions and why we are there.
2) Speak to the K1 teachers about our goals with the sessions and what the visits would look like
3) Start a ‘Baby’ plant delivery service. Have a way for the UWC community to send and receive small plants.
4) Better organisation of planting area – labelling, new plants area to keep track of our plant progress
5) Move into working with other grade level groups
6) Collaborate with other services: Raw beauty, Sustainabrew, for soaps or drinks to sell during events as well as other services with the main goal of restoration or propagation
7) Working with more developed plants in the flower beds
8) Out of school programme in botanical gardens
9) Research plants – documentation of the research
10) Advertise our service more so that people are more aware of certain plants, their growth, properties (eg. We can inform people about our research on Moringa and its medicinal properties, increasing their knowledge about the plant)
11) Plant vegetables/plants and sell seeds during the Family Festival or other events
12) Use funds to purchase more planting resources or to give to GCs, expanding our scope again beyond the UWC community
13) Collaborate with local services, eg. PPIS → bring the kids to explore our rooftop garden while simultaneously educating them in a fun manner about various plants
14) Continue our partnership with the infant schoolers
15) Experiment with and try growing more valuable varieties vegetables and fruits (eg. limes, oranges)
16) Check out/experiment with vertical farming (the vertical farm near the bus bay) —> effective use of space
We hope that the next academic year will bring us fruitful opportunities to expand our service and broaden our impact!
