Voices – Final Reflection

After months of preparation, we got to hold our 2023 Voices Production. It was a fantastic evening of shared community over spoken word pieces regarding themes of gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights. I performed 5 pieces in the show (with one even being a song) and it was an experience I am glad to have been part of. I was incredibly nervous and anxious during the performance but I came out of it with greater confidence and strength in the solidarity I felt with the audience and other cast members. It was a lengthy process which required commitment and resilience, especially when it came to my performing skills; but I do not take it for granted. Ultimately, it gave me a platform to advocate for themes which may otherwise be stigmatized but are deserving of attention. I felt that my voice was heard. I grew in my individuality through this production and I am super grateful that I got to work on it with my cast members and teacher facilitators, Emily and Claire. I stepped out of my comfort zone in an effort to re-explore a passion which I had not gotten much opportunity to return to: spoken word. For that, I feel really lucky. I hope to take this with me as a memory going forward.

Wavelengths Performance – Bersama

On Wednesday, the 8th of February, our group, Bersama, performed during the Wavelengths concert. In spite of some missed rehearsals and some members moving in and out, we successfully completed the performance. We sang 3 songs: one acapella, one with the strings orchestra and one with the pop band. It was really fun and a great opportunity to be all together as musicians. Below is a video of both of our performances and a photo before the concert. I look forward to what is up next for Bersama! We are working on two songs: one called ‘Butterfly’ and the other song named ‘Mountain Nights’.

Voices – Halfway Reflection

In Voices, we have come a long way since the start of the year. We are working towards a performance date of March 2nd that includes a script collating student written pieces and other gender justice works from external creators that we’ve found online. We’ve started practicing the whole script together with teachers as well from the English department. The performance will be held in the Black Box and overall, the process has taught me to be more confident with my public speaking and to advocate for a cause that matters to me. It is being held on the evening of the 2nd of March and each ticket will cost $10. This is the final script that we will be performing; I am doing around 5 pieces in total.

Kahaani – Final Reflection

After 4 long months hard at work, show night arrived! We got to perform twice during our two shows for a lively and fun audience. Being part of Kahaani enabled me to learn more about a different culture from my own; I really enjoyed listening to the Hindi music and expressing the joy of Durga Puja through our performance. It was collaboratively a good process as we all put in our best contributions individually to create a cohesive product. I made new connections and built on my commitment to dance more through participating in this process. It challenged me to work well with group members and continue to improve my dancing abilities for a good cause. Hearing about Kolkata GC’s connection to their NGO made me more excited to take on this project as I knew that audience interaction was going toward a really great cause of fostering education and rehabilitation for isolated members of the Kolkata community. Overall, I would like to take on this project again in my senior year. It was truly a memorable experience for us all. Below is a video of the second performance we did and a group photo of everyone all together!

Kahaani – Mid way reflection

Our Kahaani performance is scheduled for the 2nd of February and I am excited to see the final product. We have learnt all the dances and are currently working on improving and developing each stage. I have gotten better at my collaboration and been resilient through any of the difficulties our group has faced along the way. I am enjoying showing up every Monday to our rehearsals ๐Ÿ™‚

Attached here is a video of where we currently are at.

Kahaani – Initial Reflection

Recently, I have become part of Kahaani. My group is creating a performance celebrating the festival of Durga Puja which honors the Hindu goddess, Durga. We have had 2 sessions so far and we are working towards putting the whole dance together. I am developing my dancing skills and working on my collaboration with other members of the group. Attached below is a video of what we have put together so far during practice. I look forward to continuing to come together every week to dance as a collective ๐Ÿ™‚ I am enjoying coming to know more about Hindu culture through dance.

Bersama – Progress after one half term

A creative activity that I have participated in since Grade 10 is Bersama. In this activity, we work together as a group to create joint vocal performances. This activity develops collaboration as well as strength and growth. I have always loved singing since I was in elementary school and I have done my best to stick with it throughout my extracurricular career. As of now, we are working on the song Don’t Stop Me Now as a collective as well as a vocal piece called Ariadiamus Latte. We will also collaborate with other music ensembles to perform Ariadiamus Latte at some point during the year. I am happy to be part of this activity and to continue to improve my vocal skills and ability to work together with a big group.

Final Reflection on Culturama China

Participating in Culturama China is the most exciting and gratifying experience that I’ve had so far this academic year. It was incredibly fun to work with members of my group to perfect our performance and to learn from one another. I always looked forward to coming to rehearsal and building on my dance abilities. There were some blocks in the road with sometimes getting off track during practice and also some members getting sick near the performance date. But ultimately we pulled through and delivered an exciting and creative piece of art. My dance leaders worked really hard and provided us with the support that we needed throughout. I am thankful to have been part of this experience and also very grateful for there to have been a live audience this year cheering us on as we danced. When I did Culturama last year, it was virtual and not live due to COVID restrictions. Having people clapping and giving us encouraging words as we performed provided us with extra energy. I learned to work better as part of a team and also about the beauty of dance as an expression of art. I hope to do this again next year in my senior year of High School ๐Ÿ™‚

Here are some photos of the final result:

Voices – Sessions 1-3

This year, I’ve become involved in a new activity introduced to the UWCSEA East community. Voices is an activity inspired by the Vday movement which stands against gender-based violence and inspired by feminism. In the activity, we explore current world affairs and try to compile different spoken word/art pieces that match our theme. We are planning to potentially try and hold a production with varying pieces that we put together. I am proposing to write a piece about the life of a Foreign Domestic Worker in Singapore. There are links to be made for me with my filipino identity in writing about this.

Culturama China – Halfway Point

During this term, I have been part of Culturama China where I’ve been able to dance and form new bonds with different people across high school. Yesterday on the 21st of September, we got to try on our outfits for the actual show and also run through the performance as a whole together. Thus far, I’ve grown as a dancer and as a community member who collaborates with the people around me. I’ve been practicing dance semi-consistently for roughly 3 years now and Culturama is always a dance highlight of the year for me. I’ve attached a photo of a few group members and I together along with a video showcasing our progress thus far.
