Rock Climbing Final Reflection

Rock climbing has been a really positive experience recently. I stopped boxing at the end of grade 11 but decided to keep rock climbing. There was a little gap in my reflections but in October the activity changed a little. I got to join the team that would go on to do competitions. this was really amazing as I had only been to one before and they were just returning after COVID. Through this, we got to start training at a proper climbing gym which really increased my motivation to improve. I also got to know students from other grand and for a real team bond. Since then I have gone to 3 competitions while the school is mostly not as good as other schools due to our very new team all the competitions have been really fun and all the teams get along and try to help each other out. I did come 4th in one competition after being tied as 3rd for most of the event which was a really good experience and I hope to maybe win something soon. I have two more competitions one of which will be overseas which is very exciting since due to the pandemic I have never gotten to travel overseas for an activity. Through this my motivation for the sport has really grown and i really push myself during training to keep trying climbs until I finish them. Overall, I am really loving the activity and even though I don’t have very long left I really hope to find a way to continue after I finish school.

Here are some photos from the competitions

CAS Project: Project Week

Investigation

Starting up project week, my friend group split up into those who wanted to do certain activities, so we went into planning with the aim of doing rock climbing, pottery and baking. At this stage, we chose our roles and I became the project manager meaning I was in charge of planning and keeping the group on task as well as organised. The only struggle we had in that stage was that another group had issues with their group members so one joined our group. Luckily, this new member was relatively happy to join the activities we had planned.

Preparation

Preparation was a more difficult stage of the project. As project manager I was mainly in charge of the planning with the help of one other group member. The other 3 where not as involved. While part of what this taught me was the importance of delegating it also taught me about taking initiative which is a useful skill when planning and deciding for a whole group. The group member that did help allowed us to organise a good trip where we got to do things from creativity, activity and service so we got a really nice mix of activities

Action

The majority of the week went really well we had a great time with activities such as baking and soap making being a huge hit. There were a few flaws for example in the rock-climbing course we did the coach we had was very strict leading to it not being a super enjoyable experience but we pushed through and enjoyed the cycling later in the day a lot more. Another issue was that our service was really early in the morning so a few group members had trouble organising transportation so were a little late. While this was irritating it only happened once and they did eventually make it meaning they did not miss out on a lot.

Reflection

The overall process was really enjoyable and while some stages of planning caused some irritation within the group we were all able to move on from it and have a really enjoyable experience. In the future, some more free activities rather than courses such as the climbing one could be useful but overall the group really came together. The only thing that I would consider is whether or not there should have been one leader or if delegation could have happened differently with one person in charge of one day or type of activity. However, even though we did not take that approach it all came together in the end.

Demonstration

Over the CAS project I learnt a lot about being a leader and also about scheduling. When many activities only occur on specific days at specific times it meant we had to keep shuffling what activity happened when. This is a really useful skill both the scheduling and the flexibility that came with having to change things and in the future I am sure it will often come in handy. Through doing activities from all elements of CAS I feel we had a very well-rounded experience and even though I preferred the activity and creativity elements of the week I am really glad we included service as it did add some value to the trip as it was a very hand-on approach to service that I don’t get very often especially due to COVID having stopped local services meeting with their partners in person,

Piano Third Reflection

At the end of Grade 11 I decided that instead of using my exam for my performance I would instead play a song at the end of year recital as I did not feel ready to do an exam. I also decided that due to the stress that grade 12 would hold that this would be where I stop doing piano for at least a little while. Over many years of playing piano I have learnt many skills especially overcoming challenges as I struggle with learning new pieces. Here is a recording of the recital. I felt that it went quite well but it was quite challenging for me as I am uncomfortable with performing so I did make a few errors. But performing like this is very important as a skill beyond piano so I am really glad that I pushed myself to do it.

Every story is born out of and speaks to past stories.” How do two of the works you have studied refer to past stories* and/or draw upon literary traditions

The Road

The Importance of being Earnest

Thesis: All novels have soe connection to past stories and draw upon literary traditions but many diverge from these to shape a new story with different plot structure or characters  adding new and vital elements to literature

Explanation of Book 1: the Road is a novel by Cormac Mcarthy following a father and his son’s journey through a barren post apocalyptic landscape as they attempt to find a respite from the harsh world they find themselves in

Explanation of Book 2: The importance of being earnest is a play by Oscar Wilde following a comedy of errors that result from mistaken identities and attempts to escape the monotony of upper class life

Idea 1: Genre (conventions from past stories)

  • Wilde follows the “well made play”
    • which has a focus on “complex and highly artificial plotting, a build-up of suspense, a climactic scene in which all problems are resolved, and a happy ending.”. The ideas of building up suspense are shared by the novels and to some extent, the road also has a happy ending. However, the complexity and over-the-top plots are not shared. The suspense in the well-made play is often reliant on misunderstanding while the suspense in the road is built over repetitive scenes and the scale of the plot with the risk being death not the small risks of Earnest

Idea 2: Wilde changing genre while McCarthy based on old ideas

  • Wilde creating a new type of character “the dandy” while The road is based on old forms of story such as the idea of the “quest” and the Grail
    • Here link in The christian references that are part of the ‘grail’ story type as well as reference throughout the book
  • Both strayed from some traditions with Wilde adding the character type and McCarthy’s almost dystopian novel that is devoid of any new civilisation
  • But while mostly here earnest is the one that strays form convention in some ways it is more traditional
    • Earnest follows a traditional narrative structure (although very dramatically) while the Road strays from it with many monotone repetitive moments so although tensions is slowly building there is little action

Idea 3: Within the story – autobiographical videas

  • But a similarity is that the dandy was based on Wilde himself and the relationship of father and son was based on McCarthy’s own life
    • Past stories could also be autobiographical storys that influenced the writing

Evaluations of Woman’s World (Chapter 6-13)

Norma’s internal dialogue appearing during Roy’s chapters, such as during the job interview and when he talks to Eve

In chapter 11, we begin to sense the wall breakdown between the separate identities of Roy and Norma. Positioned as if in the back seat of the car ride between Eve and Roy, the first-person narrative seems to have shifted to an almost wholly third-person description. The bra being found causes Roy to deviate from his traditional “grounded” narrative. The bra is a part of his hidden person, Norma. He begins to go into magazine speak, a characteristic typical of Norma as he describes ways to clean out the stain from the white bra.

  • Suggesting an ingredient…“That get your clothes whiter than the day they were bought” (178)

Norma is Seemingly Paradoxically omniscient here shown through her narration but Roy’s reported thoughts and direct speech, norma is an unreliable narrator yet speaks as if she knows everything about everyone, creating the paradox- she is biased, almost delusional- nobody perceives situations in the same manner as her

  • The job interview
  • When he encounters Mr. Hands. Roy would not have known about Norma’s experience meeting Mr Hands for the first time but her voice still comes through “Perhaps I should introduce myself, thought Roy” strongly implying they are the same person.

Henah: The role that Mary plays in the tension between the split personas of Roy and Norma

  • Mary acts as a mother to Roy, a nurturing, caring figure, while she remains a more distant ‘housekeeper’ to Norma
  • Considering that she is, in reality, mother to both Roy and Norma, this seems to be a clear rejection of Norma and her femininity
  • Mary disposing of Norma’s clothes when she was younger can be interpreted as a desperate attempt to rid of the persona of Norma herself, but also as an attempt to move forward beyond the immense grief that Roy harbours
  • Therefore Mary’s growing acceptance—or tolerance—of Norma and her clothing choices are monumental. It breaks down the formally clear distinction between Norma and Roy, and one starts to bleed into the other

Maya: Dichotomy between norma and Roy, mary’s treatment of each. Photos and their significance to the concealment of norma and the personal identity she holds

  • “Not a single photo of me”
  • Plays a big role in the allusion to roy and norma being the same person
    • They cannot simultaneously exist, even in photos
  • “Somehow she always manages to cut me out of the shot”
  • Professional photos will ‘mean something to me – something quite special’ (197)
    • Make her feel ‘Invincible’ like ‘64000 silver shillings’ (201)
  • Power that comes with knowing norma’s true identity?
  • Mary’s treatment of norma after Roy gets a job and settles hints towards the duality, but the reluctance and outright denial of photographing her still carries an underlying tension
  •  photos serve to dramatise and emphasise norma’s womanhood, mirroring her heightened sense of femininity at the moment
  • Roy being representative of both Norma and himself is hinted towards by all the photos of him in the house
    • Especially as norma is now described as more in ‘limbo’ and ghostly when Roy is not home

Which 2 concepts are particularly interesting lenses through which to view The Glass Menagerie?

Creativity is an interesting lens seeing as it has to do with the role imagination plays. The play is a memory play that often avoids realism. A clear moment of that is the description of the set where the reader understands the meaning the description tries to portray but with the abstract language trying to build that set accurately would be near impossible. Also, creativity comes into play in the scenes where the narrator is not present and since the play is semi-autobiographical Williams likely would not have seen either, but these conversations are still written despite not being based in fact.

In a play that has a main character so similar to the author questions about how much the two share the same perspective are bound to arise. How many of Tom’s views and desires are actually those of Tennessee Williams? Also, when thinking about this, one must consider the fact that the narrator version of tom speaks with heinsight that Williams would also have creating interesting issues as memory is fallable so perspectives could become biased over time, for example with how Amanda irritated Tom in the moment but here is a feeling of fondness for her from the narrator and a little regret for leaving a feeling that probably grew over the years.

Rock-Climbing 1st reflection

I am so extremely happy to be doing rock climbing again. I first started doing the sport when I moved to Singapore in grade 6 and was part of the school’s first team to go to a competition. However, we did it off campus and due to COVID the activity shut down. Thankfully the activity has restarted. Unfortunately, it is on campus which is a shame because the school’s walls are not great but for the first time ever we have a professional coach who is teaching us techniques and setting us challenges. I really love the sport as I have been doing it for so long. I think perseverance is so important in climbing and so is having the right mindset as you keep trying to climb up the wall. There are few feelings of satisfaction quite like reaching the top of a difficult climb and I am glad I get to start enjoying that again. I was a little out of practice at the start but I think most of my skill has returned but there is always room to improve. Due to the limited size of these walls, I think my main challenge is bouldering as the coaches as able to challenge us in that respect which is good as that was always my weakest spot. Hopefully, competitions restart as it was a great experience last time as there was very little competitive spirit but rather supporting each other to do your best so it was a really friendly environment.

I think something that I want to work on is obviously my own climbing as that is the purpose of the activity but also the teamwork within it. Rock-climbing requires a lot of trust as you belay one another and ofter try to guide each other up the wall. I really want to help those I work with succeed as I know they will do the same for me.

History Society Second Reflection

History continues to be one of my favourite school activities. The group is super fun as they all enjoy the subject. This year we have made presentations on historical events which is always a good thing for me to do as being forced to present is often a little out of my comfort zone but with this group both those I am presenting with and it is not too difficult and I can see my self becoming more confident when I compare the ones this year to ones from grade 9. This year we also gathered historical sources that would give other students context to the Ukraine-Russia crisis. These were then shared with all of the high school. I think this was one of the most important things for us to do as keeping people informed and helping them understand is extremely important and history is a great tool for that. Finding historical maps on how the border has changed over the years to understand why the war started, and the ethics of the conflict in order to educate others was a really great experience, especially seeing it shared with so many people around the school. At the moment we are now starting a little book club within the activity where we read a text during the week and then discuss it in class. This is super interesting as reading sources is not only applicable to the subject as I have a source paper in the IB  but reading a variety of different perspectives on different events with many being from textbooks or other academic writings is just a really interesting way to learn about events or discover arguments on the significance of history or the differences between different ideologies.

I think this activity is extremely valuable not only due to the importance of history but due to the research skills of finding articles, analysing readings and practising presenting. This as well as a really great atmosphere in the activity work to form really positive experiences.

Debate club second reflection

I did 2 seasons of debate however, after those 2 I decided not to continue with the activity. While I love debating I did not like how formulaic and repetitive all the sessions were. The atmosphere in the activity was also not great as many people hardly spoke and the group size shrunk a little more every week. However, I do think it was a valuable experience as I did try new styles of debate and as a person who is rather shy any activity where I have to speak formally in front of a class is quite good practice as stepping out of my comfort zone is important. I also liked discussing as a group what arguments to make on different sides of a motion (debate prompt) as figuring out what is most convincing was interesting as well as trying to decide my personal opinion on an issue and try to understand complex issues in order to form an argument. I really enjoy class debates and also have done a few in history society (one of my other CAS creativities that I am continuing to do) so I do plan to continue debating and furthering those skills there. I simply felt as though I needed another free afternoon for work as I recently started Rock-climbing again which took up another afternoon. Overall, it was a valuable experience where I worked on my public speaking and I am happy with how I performed within the activity and its debates while I was a part of it.

Piano second reflection

A lot has changed since the last reflection. At the start of learning grade 8, I used my sister’s old book (she started the grade but never finished it). However, the book ended in 2020 so you can no longer take an exam on it after 2021. I decided to not try the exam as due to many delays over the past 2 years due to IGCCSEs and the pandemic I did not feel ready. So in around December, I decided to get the new book. The new pieces are great and I really enjoy them. This gave me more motivation to practice as before I was feeling a little bit helpless. I have already finished one of my three pieces and will definitely try to keep this energy up. It was quite a difficult call to make as I had been working up to this exam for quite a while but I think it is the right call. I plan to soon take part in my teacher’s piano recital for the year so I want to near-perfect one of my pieces for that day and perform it well. This is a really good aim for me as performing live in front of multiple people is quite nerve-wracking for me and I think doing this is a good thing for me to do to grow as a pianist.
