Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid/Society Blues

The song ‘Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid/Society Blues’ by Bob Dylan describes a narrator as they join the John Birch Society and begin to look for communists in all places in society. One idea that Dylan seems to be protesting is how people in society have such extreme views that cause them to take actions that may be detrimental to society.  Dylan’s use of various imagery throughout the song also helps to reinforce this idea. For example, by using the idea that the narrator is looking everywhere for communists such as “under the bed” and “in the sink”, it implies that that the narrator is so deluded that he has lost his common sense and begins to look in unreasonable places. Through this idea that the narrator is almost crazy, Dylan seems to be mocking people who have similar views, of being overly paranoid of some issues within society. If Dylan was to make a similar song in our current society, I think that he would protest about different concepts, but using the same ideas. For example, he might protest the rising disbelief in science that can be seen through anti-vaxxers, through flat-earthers.
