Key Takeaways

The context of the play Oedipus Rex seems to be very crucial to the story itself. While the play is timeless and displays lots of sophisticated philosophy on fate and tragedy, the context is also just as as important. Around that time, greek tragedies and plays were at its “golden age”, so it is quite apparent why many people considered Oedipus Rex to be one of the greats of that era. Not only are Sophocles’ uses of character, stage, and “hamartia”. The latter was used quite a lot in most greek plays, as that element of “hamartia” was what gave lots of plays its tragic element. Relative to the modern era, the influence of Oedipus Rex is widespread and evident. Lots of directors try to replicate “hamartia” by incorporating a series of “what if”s and “if only”s in their movies. Furthermore, the idea of a complex, imperfect character falling into a descent of tragedy is something almost all tragic movies use, for example, Gone Girl, Joker, Nightcrawler, Parasite, The Professional, Oldboy, The Lion King, etc.
