Latest update, post and activity from DARAJA!!

Voices

March has been a busy month. Alongside IWD, we’ve had a collaboration with with the VOWS focus group and the Voices activity group. Voice is a group that is aligned with the global v-day movement – a global activist movement aiming to end violence against women, gender-expansive people, girls, and the planet. On the second of March Voices held a set of monologues/theatre performances at the black box, discussing heavy topics like sexual assault, gender justice, and equality. This was a great opportunity for us to advocate for Daraja, display the work we do, and share the strength and admiration we have for the Daraja girls with the rest of our school community. We are grateful to the voices group for choosing our GC and hope to continue this collaboration in the future.

International women’s Day

For IWD we decided to hold a bake sale. The Sunday before the bakesale we gather together at the community kitchen to bake goods for the entire morning until 3 pm. We chose to bake 2 types of cookies (chocolate chips and double chocolate), cheesecakes, brownies and rice crispies. We attempted to make the mandazi which is a fried pastry from Kenya. We tried kneading the dough and frying the dough, however, unfortunately, we were not able to make the dough rise, moreover, the dough was underbaked. Regrettably, we had to throw the dough away. During the baking session, we decided to split into stations so that we will be able to bake all the goods at once and finish everything that afternoon. Our brownie was a success as it tasted fabulous and was the first few goods to be sold out. Our double chocolate cookies also was a great success as many people enjoy eating them. However, we found that not only was the cheesecake ingredients expensive but it was one of the hardest bake goods to be sold during the bake sale. However, on the bright side, we were able to sell out all our goods before the end of lunch time. Some members of the group also volunteered to walk around the canteen and the cafe to raise extra funds and awareness. We were able to raise a couple more of dollars by doing so. To conclude, this bake sale during IWD was a success although there are still some areas for improvement.

We peeled over 200 Oranges and lemons combined! After peeling, the fruits were squeezed, distilled and mixed with salt and sugar into a concentrate. It was a fun and a great stress-buster for all of us. Linking it to our GC, it also made us question of what the girls at Daraja might drink as ‘workout’ or ‘energy’ drinks. Or if they even do?

We filled 5 coolers with concentrate mixed with water and set them up in front of the sports hall and the field. We sat there all day from 8am to 4pm to hand out drinks to players who were thirsty and tired after playing basketball and rugby games. It was a tiring and eventful experience. However, it was worthful as we were able to promote our service and raised up to $500 in the name of our global concern! It was also satisfying to hear the thanks and how the basketball and rugby players’ faces lit up as they received the free drinks. We all learnt a great deal of patience, resilience and commitment throughout the experience.

After our first event we decided to give it another trial. Unfortunately, it still did not work out as well as we hoped it would. It was a tiring job to sit there while doing nothing as the others were playing sports and did not actuall come to the container to get the drinks. The placement of the drink was also out of eyesight therefore many of the people did not see that there was free drinks. There were also other refreshments available for the players to enjoy. To conclude, I dont think its a good idea to do this again as it is not futile.
