The main issue I had while writing my EE was ensuring that my essay was sufficiently focused on the maths of Neural Networks. However, the majority of the word count of my first draft was spent on providing thorough background information, which was good, but it meant that my essay wasn’t as focused as it should have been. Before I started making edits, I read through the essay and annotated it so that I would be able to see the areas that had mathematical potential, as well as see find redundant areas in the essay. This let me see that the most important part of my essay was finding the minimum of a multi-variable function. So I continued to learn about multi-variable functions, where  I came across the Hessian Matrix which is also used to calculate the minimum. On the day that I dedicated to working out the math, I decided to work with a specific activation function (I choose tanh) just make things more interesting. This was the highlight of the EE process – I got the rare opportunity to spend a whole day simply enjoying working on some maths without having to deal with the stresses of an exam.
