Representation – English

Do we have the right to tell another person’s story?

I believe that you are able to tell another person’s story, so long as you have done research and have a deep understanding of the topic. It is unfair to the person/people if you were to write a story about them, but you did not know enough about them for it to be accurate.

What if we love them/have known them our whole lives?

Again, I think that it is okay to do so, as long as you have all the relevant information that will ensure your story is accurate. If you love the person or have known them, this will be easier as you have a slightly different insight into their life.

What if they are being ignored but we won’t be? Can we be their voice?

If a particular group of people are not being heard, I think that it is important that someone tells their story. Everyone should be able to tell their story and if that means that someone else has to do it for them, that’s okay. However, the story must be factual and the author must have a thorough understanding of what they want to share.
