On Friday in English class, we heard our classmates tell us their stories. Mikaela told us a truly inspiring story about ‘a diagnosis that changed her life’. In 2014 she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease with only some cases of full recovery. This affected her cognitive abilities, hand-eye coordination, balance, muscles and slowed down her ability to recollect thoughts. This of course had an impact on her studies and subjects at school, she had to miss a lot of school to start her recovery process. One of the reasons I find this inspiring is because despite the trauma and difficulties, she has been on and off school for two years and makes that extra effort to cope up with the syllabus and is adamant to learn and interactive in class. She has help from an academics team, a special doctor for her bones and a team that researches her condition. She mentioned how her mom detected that something was wrong when Mikaela started becoming less aware and her condition came as a shock to everyone. Sharing her story with everyone was a big step, it required a lot of strength and courage from her side and I admire her even more than I did before I knew her well, not only because of her condition but because of how she chooses to cope with it. Doctors are still trying to find out the cause of her disease and Mikaela continues to fight. She knows it changed her but instead of feeling bad for herself, she keeps a positive attitude.
