I chose the princess’s cartoon as my non-literary text, and the extract of Top Girls about Lady Nijo’s experience as my literary text. These two texts are all linked to the theme of “domestic violence”, because the princesses are portraying the female victims of domestic abuse, whereas Lady Nijo also suffered from the violence of the emperor but eventually fought back. There is a contrast between the reactions of victims from these two texts: ones bear the violence, and one fights against it, showing the two distinctive ways women react to domestic violence.
