• keep it 3rd person and relatively formal — no “a bit” or “I’m going to”
• thesis statement —some kind of big idea to guide us through
• explain the effects of the author’s choices and how much of the meaning relies on cultural/contextual knowledge, etc.)
• make more reference to this image or text –> make your content more visibly relevant. Who made the ad? Who is it for? It’s a pony-tailed white girl etc.

 

Second CAT

What I got

 

• Had a thesis
• The response demonstrates some understanding of the literal meaning of the text.
• Focuses a lot on the facial expression which is not bad but go more into detail
• think more like “what exactly IS this book that this is the cover of?” The idea of reciprocity/ government effort to encourage multiculturalism/combat the Singaporean self-definition as Kiasu etc.

What to do next

• think further about the context and purpose and function –> elaborate
• go beyond what you see but what you know and be specific –> you know a lot of background info on SG so use it
