General Circus

Circus club so far has been quite interesting. Normally, by this time, we would be working with other children to teach them skills and develop on our own. However, due to the developing coronavirus, the school has banned the entry of people coming in so we haven’t been able to work with anyone externally,

However, we have been using our sessions to work on and develop our own skills. Typically, I’m a stilt walker with the poi, and I’m also in charge of the media for our club (@dragonscircus on Instagram).

I decided to try and learn a new skill, one that’s quite common for anyone in circus, juggling. I had tried learning this when I started out in circus club, however, I just couldn’t get the hang of the coordination and timing. I decided to give it another shot though, and Mr.Mollit, one of our teacher supervisors, showed me a trick to get used to it.

The way it works is to have two people standing right next to each other and both only using one hand, so passing the balls between each other and attempting to juggle amongst two people. It was a really big challenge as it’s tricky to gauge the distance and height the ball will travel and to time the throws perfectly. After a lot of practice and failed trials, Maxine and I were able to get a relatively good one going for a short amount of time.

I think this is a skill that I’m going to keep working on and developing as much as I can, as juggling is one of the basics everyone in circus should know.
