My UWCSEA Learning Journey

writers’ fortnight #2

My second story for the day was from a teacher in my school, who told the story of his transgender brother. Something that struck instantly to me after the story, was about the thoughts that occur behind the decision to change one’s identity. Especially during the teenage period, many students question their identity, and who they are as a person, I do too. An identity has so much to it. It is not just what your name is, where you are from, what your favourite colour is etc. etc., but it questions who you want to be in society, what truly makes you happy and feel loved. Due to my constant exposure to people of the LGBTQ+ community, I have always viewed it as a group of people who felt that they were not truly who they were, or felt that their heart was leading them to someone, not of the opposite gender. My thoughts were reinforced from this session. However, as the story started to include the rest of the family, I started to think about what his family and friends thought of this. My family specifically has neutral opinions on the community, but both my parents are not aware of what it really is, and seem to be unable to understand at all why someone would decide to change their gender identity. But for my teacher, the mother was very understanding, but for the father it took time to truly take it in. Currently in school, there are many students who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, so a potential article could be on informing families and students about the story of the teacher’s brother, to get them to feel the same way that I do about the LGBTQ+ community. Moreover, the article could be explaining what an identity is, for those who are questioning it, and also for reassurance for those who just cannot seem to get to the core of their existence.

I wish I could have been at this talk! Great idea for an article.
