Ali Ferzat Essay – Reflection

ELP

For this essay, while everyone had to write on a specific theme related to the Shakespearean play Othello, I had the freedom to choose whatever I’ve learned in my SL class. I opted to write on a cartoon by Ali Ferzat. Overall, the feedback I received was mainly centered around my scattered focus on the question (“How does Ali Ferzat use his political cartoon to explore the global issue of power?”). At first, I found the comment rather confusing, because I thought I had made apparent efforts to relate back to the question, mentioning aspects of empowerment, the fragility of Al Assad’s power, and deception used to maintain power. However, after a discussion with my teacher after class, I realized that perhaps, my question in the first place was broad and vague. Had I focused on the aspect of ‘abuse of power’ rather than just ‘power’, it probably would have been easier to structure my essay. Also, more specifically, the structure of my introduction is disorientated. Again, after a discussion with my English Teacher, I realized that the criticism was largely due to my long section dedicated to the specific context of the Syrian War. Had I shortened it, the introduction would have been more presentable. Overall, I will focus on improving my structure for my next essay.
