Stasimon: Chorus – Medea

Medea: ELP Post

The chorus in Stasimon aims to examine the role of women in society, which follows the dialogues presented between Jason and Medea. During Jason’s monologue, he first asks the god to be his witness to doing “everything in his power” to help Medea.  The chorus represents the idea that Jason is ungrateful and ignorant to pain Medea is facing, in which he sounds like as if he hasn’t contributed to Medea’s internal anger. As if he were to be helping her, it shows how society doesn’t respect women as an authority figure in these societies. But even the audience themselves, have reacted differently towards the situation faced by Medea and how it has changed. To begin with,it is evident that she is attempting to “bury the hatchet” as she has not control in society. When compared to stereotypical gender roles and expectations in society, what we see is that men are essentially able to do whatever they wish, including abandoning Medea in this case.
