The talk and Mother to son

In the poem, Mother to Son, and the advert The Talk, Hughes and P&G both celebrate the strength of black women whilst … sending a powerful message through tone and language of both pieces

in both stories, the mother/s are giving advice and guiding their children through the world which they will have to live in and the prejudices they will face throughout their lives because of something they can’t control. in Langston Hughes mother to son, the poem consists of informal language which gives off the feel of authenticity. this causes the audience to either relate to the poem or understand the message it is trying to convey. it feels real, almost like it actually happened. in the talk the mother always have direct contact with their child, this puts them at the same level and shows the severity of the topic they are talking about.

through the use of metaphors mother to son and the talk show the exclusion they face and the hardships, they have to overcome. in mother to son, the extended metaphor of the stairs tells the reader all the things they have to go through instead of others with their easier to climb crystal stairs. in the talk, one of the scenes shows a young boy behind a fence where he is being excluded from his baseball team. this physical barrier represents the social barriers that are present in society for African Americans.
