Ballet 2020 Before Reflection

Ballet is one of the areas in life I am most passionate about. It is something I have been doing since I was 3 and is something I hope to continue as long as possible. I feel as if I can truly express myself and fully be myself when I dance. I am glad I can continue Ballet given the current circumstances. Ballet challenges me more than any other activity I do but it also gives me the most joy. I just completed my exam last month and hope to take my next exam this time next year. I am looking forward to bettering my skills and techniques as a dancer and collaborating with my peers.

ITP 2020 Before Reflection

I am doing Voice for my ITP. It will be my 5th year doing Voice at this school and I am excited to continue with it. I hope to continue to develop my skills and a singer and take the exam at the end of the school year for Grade 7/8. As I am doing the musical, I believe that ITP will be very useful in helping me improve my skills as a singer and learn about all the crevices and niches within the musical theatre genre that performers must be aware of. I am also ready to continue learning new techniques and theory for my exam and bettering my skills in both those areas.

Culturama 2020 During Reflection

Culturama so far has been a wonderful experience. It’s been very different due to all the restrictions dancers must face because of COVID-19. We also have limited time till the show but I think with the dance I’ve joined, it is very organized and efficient. I am in Kenya and I love how much I’m learning about the Kenyan culture through dance and music. I previously visited Kenya for my G9 Expedition and it was one of the highlights of my GCSE years, so I feel a special bond with this dance and culture. I love performing and am excited that show day is approaching closer every day! I hope to continue to build my skills as a performer. It has been vital for us to effectively communicate and collaborate with each other to create the best possible show while following the restriction guidelines as it is a new territory for us.

Local Service (Music with Apex Harmony Lodge) 2020 Before Reflection

I have chosen to join Apex Harmony Lodge as my local service. This service allows students to interact with individuals who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s. Neuroscience is something that interests me so I think that this is a very fitting service. I also hope to gain the skills and ability needed to properly and respectfully communicate with those who have this disease and learn more about them. I know the impact music can have on helping retrieve some parts of memory even momentarily and I think this will be a very touching experience.

GC (I-India) 2020 Before Reflection

I have signed up to be a part of the I-India GC. This is a cause I feel strongly about as previously in Middle School, I was the Chair for this GC. This is GC helps children and women in India which is my home country so I feel a special connection to this service. As this is the GC’s first year in high school, I hope to be a significant part in establishing itself in its first year and taking up a leadership role.

English ATL Reflection

While we’re only about a month into the academic year, I can already see areas within English that I believe I am successful in but also aspects of my learning that could use more development. The communication ATL I find to be where my strengths lie and also features a section I believe needs improvement.

A point from the communication ATL that I believe I am doing well in is in the “Actively listen, read and watch” sub-category. The points being “I take the time to think before responding during discussions”. For the first point, I constantly contribute to class discussions and if I hear someone make an observation similar to one that I was thinking of, I try to think and find ways that I can build upon their idea. An anecdote of this would be while discussing Hedda Gabler, a fellow classmate who expressed her opinion on Hedda’s personality and how she felt that she was domineering and controlling. I agreed with her and was going to bring up the same point earlier, however, I decided to take some of the time to find examples of Hedda showing these domineering and controlling traits and connected it to my peer’s so that we could further develop this idea in class.

However, an aspect I believe needs improving is also within “Actively listen, read and watch”. The point “I write with clarity and lucidity – I ensure that my writing has sufficient depth and detail I proofread my writing“. I sometimes forget to go over my writing once I am done which results in a few silly mistakes that could have been avoided had I proofread my work. This is an area I believe needs work since these small errors could cost me a few marks and could also alter the intention of my work in some extreme cases. Attatched below are a few pictures of the mistakes I make and don’t correct since I forget to proofread.

Culturama 2020 Before Reflection

Learning Outcome 1: This will be my third year doing Culturama and it has been one of the highlights of my year in the past. Performing is one of my passions and being able to do that while also appreciating other cultures is very rewarding for me. I also get to meet many new people and create several bonds with other throughout the process of preparing for Culturama.

What have you learned while creating your icebergs?

I have learnt not to judge others based on what we just see on surface level. There are a lot more things that I don’t know about people and that I can only find out by asking questions or getting to know them more. The iceberg also let me see how others would perceive me based on first impressions and also actually let me see how many components make up my identity.

What do you wish your teachers and peers knew about you?

I may come off as very opinionated but I do respect and acknowledge other people’s views and opinions no matter how different they are to mine. I can recognize that these are opinions and they are entitled to one and just because I disagree with them, doesn’t mean I disrespect them or are saying that their opinion is wrong. Since I am opinionated, it can come off as me outright telling a person that they’re opinion is wrong when in reality that isn’t the case at all.
