Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is an important virtue everyone must have in their lives. The ability to deal with various situations in our lives can be affected positively by it.We learned about the different aspects of emotional intelligence, some which I have and some which I lack.

I feel myself becoming more aware as I am growing up, my emotional vocabulary is expanding and I am able to pinpoint how I am feeling. Now, I have a good idea as to where my strengths and weaknesses lie and am able to make better decisions because of this. The act of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes really allows you to get another perspective and be empathetic towards them.

I still have a lot of growing and learning to do. Right now I realise that I hold on to grudges, this is something I hope to let go of in the future.  We also learned about grit, a quality that I desperately desire but I don’t quite have, this is something that I hope I can develop during my journey in IB and can sustain for the rest of my life.

Emotional Intelligence is not something that can be acquired overnight, it is a life long process that we constantly refine. It is a skill that helps us improve our relationships with the people we care about, be a well balanced individual and guides us in decision making. Self awareness and social awareness helps us in multiple ways; when we are feeling low or when we’re pushing ourselves too hard we need to be able to understand that and listen to our inner voice, sometimes it tells us what’s best for us. Being able to comprehend our emotions is vital, it is necessary to express them instead of bottling them up as it may cultivate something harmful.

Emotional intelligence proffers us stability in our life. It takes a lot to be able to remain steady and calm in an adverse situation.
