Peacehaven Centre Reflection #4

LO 4 Show commitment to and perseverance in your CAS experiences

This is my end of year reflection for service. I have learnt a lot over the course of the past year and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the elderly. I have definitely gotten to know them on a personal basis and it has helped me connect with them. The language barrier was present when I talked to the Malay elderly however, I have been able to improve my Mandarin through conversations with the others. They seem quite happy to talk and tell me about their families and how life was like for them growing up. Mixing up the activities has proved to be successful as I have interacted with a much larger portion of the elderly by engaging the whole table in games such as passing a ball. For the last session of service, we decided to play bingo as Aunty had expressed liking towards it the last time we played. Aunty Isna and the rest of the centre was in a happy spirit as the next day was Hari Raya. Additionally, we found that games such as ping pong and tossing the ball in the racket have also been successful. Our regular Spider Gym and Carrom games have been parallelly carried on. The Spider Gym is one activity the elderly look forward to, especially Mr Lim and Mr Hamza. One limitation we found are the gaps we take in our service sessions due to the schedule and due to it when we returned they were very eager to exercise. Overall, I enjoyed the local service and the experience with the elderly.
