The Help Cover Analysis

This cover version of The Help is one that I feel people would have to think deeply about in order to understand its significance. At first glance, the most prominent aspect of the cover is the title, which of course is what the author would be aiming for in order

The colour scheme may be showing that its main audience is women due to the fact that the male characters are not very important to the main purpose of the book, which surrounds the representation of black maids and white female employers. The colours are quite bright, and the use of purple generally stands out to females.

As well as this, the use of birds may symbolise freedom. Despite the fact that this book is representative of the harsh inequality and treatment of black Americans, as the storyline progresses, we can see how the mindset of the black characters change as they become more empowered. The birds could be showing the hope for freedom that is recurring in The Help.

Similarly, the birds are also arranged perhaps to showcase the different characters and their relationship. The two birds on the left could symbolise Aibileen and Minny, as they are best friends, in which Aibileen tries to make Minny more open to sharing her story as she is quite stubborn, which is perhaps the reason why the bird is facing away, and Aibileen is facing forward. The bird to the far right could symbolise Skeeter, because in The Help she forms a very strong relationship with Aibileen, however, since she is white, she is still closed off from their world, which is why she is far away from the other birds.
