Pre-Season Touch Rugby

This reflection is for pre-season touch. I took part in touch last year. Last year was my first year playing, I really enjoyed it and therefore decided to take part in pre-season this year. In the group of pre-season, because of my position that I play, I had different abilities and skills, which some were more developed that others.

Pre-season really helped me learn my strengths and areas of challenges.

Strengths

  • Short passing
  • Setting up for someone
  • Running on to the ball
  • A good understanding for the game
  • Driving the ball forward

Challenges

  • Fitness was a long-term goal I needed to work on
  • Long Passes (30 meters)
  • Left-hand passing (Would like to improve during the season)
  • One-handed Scoops
  • Pulling my corner on defense

I could tell my ability when I played with the U16 girls, I had to take on a leadership position as I had more skill. But when playing with the U19 Girls I being new to the team this year, it was really challenging and I had to learn my ability as an individual.

Playing to our own individual strengths is really important in the team. Knowing my strengths and weaknesses, I took that into account when playing. Like if I was on the field with lucy I wouldn’t ask to dive, because lucy is really good at diving, therefore, I would pull the defenders out, and pass back into her so that she would be open to dive and score. Playing into my strengths and weaknesses helps us win the games. I know that I am not the best scooper, but Ishta and Chloe are therefore I would drive the ball straight and dump for them so that they could scoop through.

AAM Advisory League (Touch Rugby)

AAM Advisory League happens every Saturday we play games against other teams, like university teams and clubs. The games are always very challenging. They often occur around 2pm in the afternoon, during which is it very hot. This has taught me a lot about commitment, as we lost most of the games, me and my team mates had to preserver. I learnt that being committed is very important as, one day we only had 8 plays show up as the rest where busy, it was the toughest game I have ever played. I learned that if you aren’t committed to your team, you are letting everyone down, and it impacts the success of the game. My homework and school affected my commitment to the games, as sometimes I had a lot of work to do, but I had to stay committed to AAM Advisory League and persevere. I had to go to the game and put my commitment above school and homework, for the time being.
