We always hear about Syria – refugees ‘taking jobs’ and being hostile toward European populations, with all the nuances of that debate. Yet the United Nations says that Uganda took in more refugees than any other part of the world in 2016. Why? The influx came almost entirely from South Sudan, as civilians flee conflict and widespread famine.
This reporting from Al Jazeera helps frame the situation;
As more and more refugees stream into Uganda and out of conflict zones, few move far from the camps, unable or unwilling to adapt to new environments and conditions. These camps keep growing in size, and in the Yida refugee camp around 5 children died everyday from malnourishment and poor living conditions.
