Today is World Refugee Day! To kick start our event we invited the Grade 3’s to share their learning and poetry on Refugees!
The Grade 3’s have been spending the past few weeks studying migration, and have just completed their unit. They studied the causes and effects of migration and they talked about forced migration, and they studied a few example stories. One of the stories was about a young Syrian girl called Malak.
“They are not an issue, they are people.”
The children had recently completed a migration simulation, and they went on to share how this made them feel
“It made me feel empathy for the refugees, it shouldn’t be like that for them.”
They also shared their thoughts on the refugee crisis in Syria and in South Sudan. Despite being only in Grade 3, they have demonstrated a complex understanding of this topic.
They have shown us that it is possible and very important for kids to have an understanding of this crisis from an early age, as it can help them understand that they can make a difference.
