HS Medical Society Season 1 and 2

Medical Society is an activity that provides a chance for people interested in taking medicine as further study to obtain previous experience. Since I am personally interested in biology and wanted to understand more about medicine, I participated in it.

CBL, as one of the practices we often do, is to help us in processing the knowledge and information in a more effective and impactful way. In the CBL, there is a stimulation of you having a patient in front of you where you need to politely communicate with the person, ask them for information such as symptoms, private information or family history, etc. Through the information, you gain and as the development of the patient’s symptoms which is part of the storyline, you may give apply testings to them after convincing them and getting their consent first and give the final judgment. Another team will be the competitor where the group gets the correct name of the diseases considered as the winning team.

I have never done such a way of learning as CBL and of course, no previous medicine-related knowledge besides the biology did and doing at school.

In season 1, I was absorbing all the new knowledge I heard and the unfamiliar concept and theory. I understood that in CBL, the person speaking needs to be careful with their attitudes which means they need to always respect the patient and being careless of asking the same question repeatedly can possibly make a negative impact where the simulated patient can be dissatisfied and will not answer it again. Also, there is a form for us being a team taking down the personal information as well as a reminder of what type of question is useful to be asked during the process. So now I understand the purpose and structure of this activity where it is to simulate how an actual inquiry can be like in real life, thus what needs to be minded of.

Besides, we did a presentation in the group, introducing a specific type of disease to the class.

In season 2, we did different CBLs as well. this time, however, I gained new reflection that teamwork is also an important element to be developed through this way of educating. Before, I enjoyed the team working together as well. This time when meeting an uncertain thing where our group mate all had their own ideas, the bringing together and discuss of the thought successfully open a new window for the situation thus find the actual answer in the end as well. Imagining if one person is working in the same position it will be undoubtedly harder for the person to extend the thought in the number of ways a team will do and quickly resolve it. Also, when dividing the works into people, where one particular person will be in charge of the form filling, etc. it was a significant way of cooperation as well.

We watched actual surgery which gave me a detailed picture of how a doctor might be like and what will they face. We also had opportunities to get introduced by one of the medical school, getting advice from previous students doing medicine or Grade 12 students who are preparing for doing medicine.

LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

LO 4 Show commitment to and perseverance in your CAS experiences

LO 5 Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

In MedSoc, I definitely comprehend a lot more information in relation to medicine and diseases. Although I was just initially interested in medicine but planning to do biology major in the future, this increased my interest at the same time taught me more about medicine. I was attending the session every week to do the session together in a group or listen to the information provided and I felt the power of working together on the same problem specifically in season 2.
