The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale by Magaret Atwood is the story of a dystopian society set in a place called New England, which we understand used to be the United States, specifically in a district called Gilead. The society is totalitarian and very religious, there’s a heavy focus on women in society mainly in the sense that they are educated/reformed to fit the society and they are each assigned certain roles or jobs for a household. I think that women have a relatively important role in the society but they are often exploited in their households as well, I realised that fertile women were given importance because they had the responsibility to procreate. The story acts as a warning because it exaggerates some of the issues in society today and informs people of the possible future we may live in if things go in the same direction.
