Writers Fortnight 2020 Day 1 – Journalism

In the past week in English, we have been doing journalism and have learnt the different types of Articles. The different types of articles are Hard news, Feature Article, and an Op-Ed Article. A Hard News article is a poly-vocal text that has factual information and evidence that is meant to persuade the audience. A Feature Article is a piece of nonfiction writing that is represented in an emotive and narrative style, the text tends to be mono vocal therefore having a certain degree of bias. The writing tends to also have sympathetic value on the readers. Op-Ed Articles or an Opinion Edited Article is ideally a polyvocal text that addresses a topic that the author has a strong opinion on (but the editor or news firm may not share the same views) to persuade the reader to sympathize or to call to action.

There was a journalist that came to speak with us about writing articles and the different aspects of writing. He spoke to us about how important the title of an article is. He used an example to show us how a title can draw in readers and spread more breaking news. The article was about the hong kong protests and specifically talked about them from the POV of a protester.

The role which journalists play in telling stories is paramount, they are the ones who mutter words from other people’s mouths. They are so important because the stories they tell should be truthful, unbiased and create an accurate representation of the subject being discussed. The research, edit, write and then publish work that is seen by audiences small, or big and should, therefore, create truthful stories, corroborated with facts and devoid of biases.  A great journalist is one that takes into account all audiences and talks about both sides of the coin, covering both sides of a story.

  1. “The role which journalists play in telling stories is paramount, they are the ones who mutter words from other people’s mouths.” I find this interesting, that your take on it, that a journalist is a voice for many groups of people and their opinions. I would like to ask you how can we write in what ways can we write more of the truth in our articles? What does it really mean by bias?
